Replacing missing teeth offers many advantages, including improved appearance and better capability for eating and speaking. If you're thinking about tooth replacement, a consultation with your Silver Spring, MD, dentist, Dr. Susan Pearson, can help you reach a decision on which is best for you. As a primer, consider some of the benefits of bridges, dentures, and dental implants.

Bridges

Bridges are often used to restore one or two missing teeth and consist of artificial teeth connected to crowns. The hollow crown portion of the bridge slips over teeth on either side of the gap to hold the bridge firmly in place. Prior to receiving a bridge, the teeth that will receive crowns must be slightly reduced in size to ensure a comfortable fit. All of this is done during a quick, discomfort-free procedure.

Dentures

Removable dentures rest on your gums and replace all of the teeth in your upper or lower jaw. Full dentures are used after your mouth has healed completely from tooth extractions. Immediate dentures are placed in your mouth just after the removal of your remaining teeth. Both of these denture-types will need to be adjusted periodically to ensure a secure, comfortable fit.

Partial dentures can also be used to replace several missing teeth in a row. The dentures are attached with small clasps to nearby teeth.

Dental Implants

Dental implants replace the crowns (visible parts of your teeth) and your tooth roots. Titanium posts that serve as replacement roots are implanted in your jawbone during minor oral surgery. The posts gradually bond to your jawbone and eventually become as strong as your natural roots.

Dental crowns attached to the tops of your implants improve your appearance and restore your natural biting ability. Since your new tooth is rooted in your mouth, you won't notice a decrease in your biting ability.

Implants are a very versatile tooth restoration option. Although they're frequently used to replace just one missing tooth, they're also a good choice if you've lost several missing teeth or want to restore all of your teeth with implant-supported dentures.
