Is your smile missing teeth? If so, dental implants can replace them. Implants are small anchors that are inserted into the jawbone. After Implantthe bone has healed, false teeth are secured to the top of the implants. Dr. Susan Pearson in Silver Spring, MD, offers state-of-the-art dental implants to the patients she serves. Read on to find out how dental implants can rebuild your smile.

1. They can enhance your smile. Missing teeth can ruin an attractive smile. Dental implants can improve your smile and boost your confidence and self-esteem. Dental implants look like your original teeth. With dental implants, you will have a beautiful smile to face the world for the rest of your life.

2. They can improve your speech. The absence of one or more teeth can also affect your speech. Missing teeth can cause people to slur or mumble words. Dental implants can improve the clarity of your speech, allowing you to feel more confident when talking with others. Dental implants will also allow you to talk with people without the worry that your dentures might slip out of place.

3. They can improve chewing ability. The absence of one or more teeth can affect your ability to chew food. With implants, you will experience an improvement in chewing ability. Due to the extreme stability of dental implants, the new teeth are firm and make eating as comfortable as your natural teeth.

4. They prevent jawbone loss. When you're missing a tooth, the healthy jawbone no longer receives the necessary stimulation and begins to deteriorate. Implants are anchored in the jawbone just like real teeth. Over time, they will help reduce bone resorption and preserve the bone. Implants are the only tooth replacement option that stops bone loss and stimulate bone growth.

5. They prevent teeth shifting. When you're missing a tooth, your existing teeth begin to shift over time. If your teeth shift out of alignment, a bite problem may develop. Dental implants will close the gaps in your smile and prevent your existing teeth from shifting out of place. If you see a dentist soon after you lose a tooth, you can replace your missing tooth before teeth shifting occurs.

6. They prevent facial sagging. Facial sagging due to bone loss and a lack of structure due to lost teeth is common. Even patients with dentures may experience some degree of facial sagging. Facial sagging can make you look old before your time. Dental implants can help keep your face looking young and prevent facial sagging.

If your untreated, missing teeth have you feeling that your smile is not up to par, your Silver Spring, MD, dentist can help you restore yourdental-implants look with dental implants. These dental restorations are often considered the gold standard of teeth replacement and stand on their own without the need to use the surrounding healthy teeth as anchors. Find out more about dental implants and how they work with some common FAQs and visiting Susan Pearson DDS.

How do dental implants work?
There are three important components that make up a dental implant: the fixture, the abutment, and the prosthetic. Your Silver Spring, MD, dentist implants the fixture directly into the jawbone under your gap. The abutment attaches to the fixture to hold the prosthetic, your replacement tooth, in place.

What is a dental implant made of?
An implant’s fixture and abutment are made from titanium, a corrosion-resistant, implant-grade metal, which is often used in medical and dental devices and procedures. The prosthetic tooth is made of porcelain, which closely mimics a tooth’s natural appearance and light reflecting qualities to blend seamlessly into your smile.

Do I need a dental implant?
If someone has a missing tooth, they can benefit from an implant. Dentists may suggest two implants on either side of a dental bridge for patients who have several missing teeth in a row. Implant-supported dentures are suited for patients missing all the teeth on an arch. Implants work independently of healthy teeth, meaning that patients with multiple gaps can have several implants throughout their mouths to replace multiple teeth.

Are dental implants safe?
Dental implants are FDA-approved and have been used safely in dentist’s offices across the world for over 40 years. Implants are permanent and last a lifetime with the proper care — simply following the American Dental Associations recommendation of brushing twice a day and flossing once.

Treat your tooth loss with the next best thing to real teeth.

Dental ImplantsWe know that there are many people out there who are dealing with tooth loss and are looking for a reliable tooth replacement. Dental implants are small metal posts that are placed within the jawbone, allowing them to function just like real teeth do. It’s truly as close as you can get to the real thing. From the office of our Silver Spring, MD, dentist, Dr. Susan Pearson, read below to learn how dental implants can help you!

Replace One or More Teeth

No matter whether you are missing one, several, or all of your teeth, dental implants can be the right tooth replacement option for you. While a single implant will only take the place of one missing tooth, several implants can be placed along the jawbone to support a whole set of false teeth.

Preserve Your Bone Health

Did you know that one serious complication of untreated tooth loss is a deteriorating jawbone? Since you no longer have all of your tooth roots, your jawbone isn’t getting the ample stimulation that it needs to continue producing new bone cells. As a result, the jawbone loses density and begins to break down. The only restoration that can actually stimulate the jawbone and protect it is a dental implant.

Prevent Misalignments

The last thing you want to face after tooth loss is an out-of-place shifting of your remaining teeth; however, this is something that will happen if you don’t fill those gaps with a proper tooth replacement. By placing a dental implant not long after tooth loss, our Silver Spring, MD, restorative dentist can prevent the rest of your smile from shifting or moving around.

Feel More Confident

Having a damaged smile in any capacity is enough to make someone feel embarrassed by their appearance. You may find that you smile less often and that you avoid social situations because of your tooth loss. Luckily, the only person who will know that you have a dental implant is you, meaning that you can feel confident sporting a full smile once more. Go ahead, light up that room!

Enjoy Your Favorite Foods Again

We know how challenging it can be to enjoy certain meals when you have to worry about the possibility that your remaining teeth won’t be able to properly chew the food. However, since dental implants function just like real teeth, you won’t have to worry about that! They will stay in place and completely restore chewing, making mealtimes stress-free and enjoyable again!

The loss of even one tooth can significantly change your appearance. Fortunately, dental implants offer an excellent solution when your dental implantssmile isn't quite as full as it once was. Our Silver Spring, MD, dentist, Dr. Susan Pearson, explains how dental implants work and shares a few benefits.

Dental implants restore your entire tooth

Dental implants are a good choice when you want to replace your entire tooth, not just the part you reveal when you open your mouth. The process starts by implanting a small titanium post in your jawbone in the exact spot once occupied by tooth roots. If you plan to replace several teeth, you'll need more than one implant, although you won't necessarily need one implant for each missing tooth.

During the next three to six months, you'll wait for your implant to bond to your jawbone before proceeding to the next step in the process, the addition of a crown.

Once your implant has successfully bonded to your jawbone, a small screw will be added that will connect a dental crown to it. Your crown will be custom-made to fit your mouth using an impression made in our Silver Spring office. After the crown is connected to the implant, no one will be able to tell that you lost a tooth.

A few important reasons you may want to consider dental implants

When you receive a dental implant, you'll enjoy:

  • A new tooth that looks and feels completely natural. Because your crown is securely attached to your implant, you won't notice any difference when you use the tooth to eat. Slipping or irritation that can occur with other restoration options aren't a problem with dental implants.
  • Quick and simple care requirements. You won't need any special solutions or other products to care for your implant. In fact, keeping your dental implants healthy only requires regular brushing and flossing.
  • Improved jaw strength. Although it may have appeared that chewing was the only function of your lost tooth, it also performed another equally important job. Roots stimulate the bone in your jaw and help it maintain its strength. When a tooth is lost, the underlying bone can begin to weaken and shrink. In some cases, the bone may become so weak that it can no longer support your teeth. Implants take over for your tooth roots, preventing the problem.

Find out what factors make you an ideal candidate for this long-term tooth replacement treatment.

Losing a tooth many centuries ago may have spelled disaster for a smile, but with modern-day dentistry, tooth loss treatments have dental implantscome a long way. Our Silver Spring dentist, Dr. Susan Pearson, understands how stressful this issue can be and that’s why we offer amazing options like dental implants for replacing your missing teeth for life.

You Want a Restoration that Stays Put

Dentures rest on the gums, which can cause them to rub against gum tissue and cause irritation. Dentures also use suction to stay in place, but some patients find that dentures actually move around in their mouths, making it difficult to chew or speak. But implants actually fuse together with the jawbone so you won’t have to worry about implants moving around at all.

The Rest of Your Smile Isn’t Affected

If you get dental bridges we will need to file down natural teeth so that they can anchor the bridge in place. So instead of just one tooth being replaced three teeth will be affected to get a dental bridge. But when you choose to get dental implants in Silver Spring you won’t have to worry about altering the rest of your smile.

Enjoy Your Favorite Foods

If you have dentures and want to dine on a delicious steak you may bite down just to find that your dentures pop right out. This can be frustrating when all you want to do is enjoy meals but your dentures dictate what you can and can’t eat; however, with implants you won’t have this problem. Implants are a permanent part of your jawbone, so enjoy that beautiful steak or whatever your heart desires.

Clean Implants Like Real Teeth

When it comes to implants you won’t need to remove them to soak them overnight. Instead, implants can be cleaned just like natural teeth. There is no special toothbrush or toothpaste needed for your implants. Just keep using the same products you’ve been using for keeping your mouth clean. And don’t forget those six-month professional dental cleanings!

Dental implants have been saving countless smiles and they could be the ideal restorative dentistry you’ve been looking for in Silver Spring. If you want to find out more about getting dental implants then call Dr. Pearson today for a consultation.
